We are very pleased to announce that the Steering Committee has elected two (2) focal points, representing the Global South and the Global North.
Melina Sakiyama (Brazil) was elected as Global South Focal Point and Christian Schwarzer (Germany) was elected as Global North Focal Point.
Melina and Christian can be contacted at melina.sakiyama@gmail.com and christian.schwarzer@gmail.com
The elections were conducted by the Steering Committee as part of their mandate:
The Steering Committee is the main coordinating body of the network and ensures that the mission and goals of GYBN are achieved.
In accordance with the GYBN Statute, adopted at the Kick-Off conference in Berlin, it is required that the Steering Committee has between
eight to fifteen members, coming from each of the world regions. The elected Steering Committee was responsible to elect two Focal Points
out of its members based on pre-defined criteria.
Currently the following GYBN members are serving as part of the Steering Committee:
Shankar Adhikari (Nepal)
Tomas Badura (Czech Republic)
Shailyn Drukis (Canada)
Mirna Ines Fernández (Bolivia)
Mesfin Hailemariam (Ethiopia)
Dayna Noltie (Canada)
Melina Sakiyama (Brazil)
Christian Schwarzer (Germany)
Achmad Solikhin (Indonesia)
Lemuel Vega (Mexico)
In accordance with the GYBN statute one (1) representative of Indigenous Youth and one (1) youth representative from the host-country of the upcoming CBD COP (South Korea) will be elected very soon.
FOCAL POINT ROLE
The two Focal Points must have extensive previous experience with working with GYBN and the CBD-Process and are serving as communication channel (contact person) between the network and external bodies (in particular but not limited to, the CBD Secretariat). For the Focal Points, it is mandatory that one person is
from the Global South and the other from the Global North. In addition, gender balance among the two Focal Points is strongly encouraged.
The Focal Point position is crucial to maintaining the functionality of GYBN and a good relationship with the CBD secretariat. Therefore only candidates with extensive previous experience with working with GYBN and the CBD-process can run for this position. Participation in at least one (1) CBD COP and prior involvement in GYBN activities is mandatory for focal point candidates.
FOCAL POINT ELECTION PROCESS
Two members of the Steering Committee (Melina Sakiyama and Christian Schwarzer) applied for the Focal Point position, and after a screening process by the Steering Committee confirming their qualification for the position, the Steering Committee approved their application and since they were the only candidates, they were elected as Focal Points.
